A Study of Mosque’s Academic Function through the Early Qur’an Annotation School
JIN Zhongjie
Abstract As one of the externalized symbols of Islam, masjid plays an indispensable role in the development of Islamic culture and society. For a long historical period of time, it performed as the academic center and served as the platform for the formation and systematic development of Islamic culture. One typical example of the masjid’s academic function is the Qur’an Annotation School set up by tābi‘īn in Makkah, Madīnah and Iraq at the historic Dawn time (610~750).
